The design for the Black Honey fruit bowl is based on the honeycombs a bee will make and incorporates the same series of hexagonal cells. The side is curved to closely resemble the traditional fruit bowl people are accustomed to seeing in every house. The irregularity of the curved Black Honey attempts to evoke, “the sensation of a flowing biological material frozen in movement.”
By providing a constant offset parameter along each honeycomb structure, the design could follow that to a base curve of a traditional fruit bowl structure by varying the hexagonal cells shape.
Black Honey is made with epoxy resin (built through Stereolithography), measures 17 inches wide, and weighs about 2 pounds. This weight is necessary so that the piece will be able to support that of the fruit without having to re-balance itself or lose equilibrium.
